Koodalmanikyam in Irinjalakuda is loved as the rare temple where Bharata, the devoted younger brother of Sri Rama, is worshipped. The Lord – called Sangameswara, the Lord of the Confluence, and affectionately Koodalmanikya Swami – has the four-armed form of Vishnu, and he stands alone: there is no Ganapathi or any other sub-shrine inside the nalambalam.
Worship here is simple and unusual. There are only three poojas a day and no daily seeveli procession, and camphor and incense sticks are not used. Only lotus, tulasi and thechi flowers are offered, and none of them is grown in the temple grounds. The great temple ponds, a large koothambalam and the festival in Medam make this one of the best-known temples of central Kerala, and it is the second stop on the Nalambalam pilgrimage.
Devotees believe that Bharata is worshipped here in the mood of the moment when Hanuman brought him word that Rama was at last returning to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile – deep relief after a long and anxious wait. The idol's story is tied to Thriprayar: according to tradition, the chieftain Vakkay Kaimal was told in a dream of four idols that had come ashore, and he installed Rama at Thriprayar, Bharata at Irinjalakuda, Lakshmana at Moozhikkulam and Shatrughna at Payammal.
The temple's name has more than one story. Koodalmanikyam is the Malayalam form of Sangameswara, recalling a time when two rivers were thought to meet here. A folk tale says that a strange light once shone from the idol's forehead; to compare it, a precious stone – a manikyam – was brought from the ruler of Kayamkulam, and as it was held up beside the idol it is said to have slipped and merged into it. Yet another tale tells of a holy man who tried to gather the divine power of many temples into a conch; he fell at Irinjalakuda, the conch broke, and all that power flowed into this one idol.
The temple is very old. A stone inscription of the Chera king Sthanu Ravi, dated to about 854–855 CE, records land given to it. For centuries the Thachudaya Kaimal held the title of its spiritual and temporal head. Today it is run by the Koodalmanikyam Devaswom, a managing committee set up under a law of the Kerala government. The pond inside the walls, Kulipini Theertham, is held to be as sacred as the sanctum: water for the nivedyam is drawn only from it, and the priests bathe in it before entering the sreekovil.
